Overview of Tasks for Helpers

Kitchen

Chopping: Your job will be to peel and chop ingredients (using a great food processor). If help is needed in another part of the kitchen during your shift, you’ll be asked to lend a hand there too.

Cooking: Your job will be to cook (who would have thought :)). Under the guidance of our “head chefs”, you’ll help provide hot meals for the ZaPF. If help is needed in another part of the kitchen during your shift, you’ll be asked to lend a hand there too.

Washing up: Your job will be to wash the dirty dishes using our industrial dishwasher. To make sure it doesn’t get too boring, a jukebox will be provided for you.

Serving food: Your job will be to take the prepared food from the kitchen to the serving area and serve it to the hungry people waiting there. To make sure you don’t miss out on a meal, we’ll be happy to set some food aside for you.

Looking after the all-day breakfast: Your job is to keep an eye on the all-day breakfast and top things up when necessary. Of course, you’re welcome to help yourself to the buffet as well.

Registration

To take part in ZaPF, ZaPFika must register. You can help with this! There are various tasks that need to be carried out, including checking and cross-referencing lists, handing out conference bags and processing payments.

Check-out

At the end of the conference, ZaPFika must check out again. This involves several tasks. Ticking items off lists, processing payments and handing out extra merchandise.

Conference Desk

Your job is to help participants who come to the conference desk with questions. Don’t worry, you don’t need to know everything – you’ll be in constant radio contact with the organising team. In short, you’re simply the general point of contact and will direct people to the right people.

Sleeping arrangements

Night watch: In short: your job is to make sure no fire breaks out. To keep things interesting, we’ll provide you with a cosy spot, internet access, a laptop, and snacks and drinks.

Wake-up calls: During your shift, you’ll wake people up at varying volumes according to their specified preferences. There are two wake-up rounds, an earlier one and a later one. Both take place before breakfast.

Evening programme

Games night: Everything to do with the games nights. Tasks may include: setting up, supervising, and clearing away.

Evening supervision: You help supervise the evening programme, creating a wide range of activities for our ZaPFika.

Other

Microphone Angel: To ensure everyone can be heard during plenary sessions, microphones need to be brought to them. You can test the limits of the speed of light or simply walk. That’s fine too.

AK Angels: Bring coffee and other caffeinated drinks, as well as snacks, to the more or less tired ZaPFika members in their AKs, so that work can continue in high spirits! Your tasks: Pick up food from the Eternal Breakfast and distribute it to AK-ZaPFika on a round trip through the building. If you feel the urge to ask, “Anything off the trolley, dears?”, that’s fine too :)

Kangaroo: Because ‘Springikon’ sounds a bit odd, we’ve gone for this bouncy term instead. You hop from place to place and help out wherever you can. When there’s nothing on, you can wait for new assignments at the conference office.

Car Kangaroo: You help people get from A to B by driving them in a vehicle that hops along (only on cobblestones). You’ll be based at the conference office between journeys. The car will be provided for you.

Excursions: You should know your way around or be good at reading maps, as you’ll need to be able to guide ZaPFika from one place to another in Göttingen whilst remaining approachable.

Cleaning

Physics – cleaning: To ensure everyone can enjoy a hygienic ZaPF, a bit of cleaning is needed from time to time. Cleaning equipment will be provided for this, and you can decide for yourself what needs cleaning and how. You should focus particularly on the bathrooms and the area around the breakfast bar. You may also be asked to focus on specific areas.

Housekeeping - Maintenance: Your task is to walk through the occupied areas, empty the bins there and, if necessary, restock the bathrooms with fresh towels and toilet paper.

Cleaning sleeping areas: To ensure everyone has a hygienic place to sleep, a bit of cleaning is needed from time to time. Cleaning equipment will be provided for this, and you’ll be driven by car to the various accommodation areas. You’re free to decide for yourself what needs cleaning and how. In particular, you should check the bathrooms and the night watchman’s area.

Party

Setting up the party: If you want to party, you’ve got to help set it up. And so that we can spare as many people as possible from having to do that, we need you! This might involve: lifting things, mopping the floor, tidying up, ...

Party clear-up: Don’t want to leave straight after the party? No problem! By helping with the clear-up, you can extend your time at the party! This could include: lifting things, mopping the floor, tidying up, ...

Party Entry Keep an eye on who’s coming to the party.

Bar: Quenches the thirst of thirsty ZaPFika with drinks.

Party Kangaroo: Hops around and helps out wherever needed.
